Here is a great info graphic from Allen over at YourLocalSecurity.

If you’ve been reading my posts lately, you know I’ve been battling with a bout of stress-induced insomnia. This is very timely and I’m thankful that Allen gave me a shout about it coming out.
In case the image isn’t working here are some of the tips in the infographic:
Health Risks of Not Sleeping
- 7-9 hours – recommended amount and improves both health and daily alertness
- 5-7 hours – the average amount of sleep per night for an american adult
- 0-5 hours – puts you at huge health risks …
- 2.5x higher risk of diabetes
- 45% higher risk for heart attack
- 12% higher risk of death
That caught my attention. Time to move to a different zone on that chart and get more sleep.

I’ve been in the 5-7 range for a couple weeks now, but I would love to bump it up in the 7-9 range. It just seems like I have so much work to do, but never enough time in the day to do it!
One thing I took away from the graphic is the craving for salty, fatty foods. This is usually a standard signal from your body that you’re stressed or your body is. If I’m not mistaken, this problem originates in the adrenal glands.
When you’re stressed, your adrenal glands have to start working overtime. As a result, they start to become strained, and require salty/fatty food to get them back to normal.

I’m right there with you Robert.
I have also been doing digging into adrenal glands in my copious free time to understand their function; and recovery.
That definitely would be worth looking into more. I definitely am more stressed when I don’t sleep well, so there could be a connection there.
Rest and recovery – I’m letting those adrenal glands recoup.
I pretty much know that my basal metabolic sleep rate is 6 hours. I typically go to bed at 3am and wake up at 9am consistently. It makes me laugh when you see these motivational videos and they say you have to sacrifice sleep if you want to be successful. I don’t buy into that. I would rather get a full nights rest and work hard while I am up and not half heartedly.

I like how the infographic refers to the leptin hormone. People often overlook the power of the body’s hormones in creating a fat burning or fat storing body. Leptin is a key one. Get your sleep!
I actually never even thought of this.
I know sleep is essential and rest is also key for your muscle development but this kinda puts it all together..
Thanks for the post!

Very cool graphic! I’ve always noticed that I eat MUCH more following a night with very little sleep. The effects on the frontal lobe are quite interesting … lack of originality and lack of focus are definitely effects that I feel as well.
