1,000 Swings – Persistance Pays Off

1,000 Kettlebell Swings

Thanks to twitter I found a new workout. I was talking with Aaron Pierson (@NoCoKettlebell) and he mentioned knocking out 1,000 kettlebell swings. I had to learn more and this morning I gave it a shot. I performed 1,000 kettlebell swings in less than 40 minutes using my 24kg kettlebell.

The Workout

The workout is an extended interval program that lasts for 40 minutes. I set my tabata timer on my phone for 30 seconds on, and 30 seconds rest. My target was to get in 25 swings each period. That paces means by the end of 40 rounds I nailed 1,000 reps.

I made it!

I made it with some trials. About half way through I didn’t think my grip would last. It felt like my 24kg kettlebell was going to slip out of my hands and go flying across the garage floor. I tried shifting positions by doing one hand swings or even hand to hand swings. Every position demanded that my fingers hold onto the kettlebell, it was tough.

Persistance

Like many situations in life we need to develop persistance. I first set a goal of getting through 30 rounds. I convinced myself I had made it half-way; I could keep going that far.

Just like projects at work. Too often we get half-way and want to quit. We need to set intermediate goals. Goals that we will feel good accomplishing.

I made it through 30 rounds. Now I only had 10 left. I persisted, setting an intermediate goal of 5 more rounds. I made that. At that point there was no stopping I could see the end. I kept going.

In workouts and in life we need to persist to succeed.
